National, European, or also in Switzerland? Don't decide blindly: you could waste hundreds of euros if you choose incorrectly. 📍 Trademark in Spain (OEPM): ideal if your business is local or you only sell in Spain. It costs around €125 and is more difficult to challenge. A good starting point if you don't have the budget to fight oppositions. 🌍 European Union Trademark (EUIPO): protects 27 countries at once, but with a catch: if someone opposes in just one country, the registration can fall through for all of them. Starts from approximately €850. 🇨🇭 Trademark in Switzerland (IPI/IGE): this is the one most often overlooked. Switzerland is not in the EU, so a European trademark DOES NOT protect you here: a separate registration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property is required. The basic fee is around 450 CHF for up to 3 classes. If you want to cover several countries at once - including Switzerland - from a single application, there is also the Madrid Protocol, managed by WIPO. My usual recommendation: if you don't have the budget to defend an international opposition, start where your business is right now and consider expanding later. And if the European registration fails, there's the option to convert it to a national trademark: not all is lost. What stage is your business at right now: local, ready to make the leap to Europe, or already generating revenue in Switzerland too?
